Disney’s ‘Aladdin‘ is taking over the international box office with a magical weekend haul of $121M. The Arabian folktale has captured the top spot in almost all the international markets. The remake of 1992 animated classic reportedly attracts families with kids which reportedly helps the movie in his better-than-expected performance in its opening week at the box office. The global three-day opening of the movie is $207.1M.
‘Aladdin’ opens up in China with a solid three-day haul of $18.7M . According to Disney, the movie is far ahead of ‘Maleficent‘ and ‘Cinderella’ in the European and Chinese markets. The U.K. tops among the European markets with $8.4M ahead of openings of ‘Rocketman‘ and ‘The Secret Life of Pets 2.’ The ‘Pets’ sequel collected $4.1M in the opening.
Italy witnessed its second-highest opening weekend in 2019 with a $6.6M for ‘Aladdin,’ behind only to Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ ‘Aladdin’ also leads the Spanish market as the second highest opening weekend in 2019.
Mexico has generated an estimated $9.2M in first three days for ‘Aladdin,’ which is the highest opening in Latin America in 2019. The movie has also become the top release in Indonesia and the second highest in India and Vietnam in 2019. In Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines, it is the third highest opening flick of 2019.
Disney’s 1992 original movie, which is based on the Arabic folktale of the same name from the ‘One Thousand and One Nights,’ earned a massive $502M from the global market. The 2019 reboot features Mena Massoud in the titular role of Aladdin, Will Smith as the mighty and mischievous Genie and Naomi Scott as Jasmine, the princess and Aladdin’s love interest. The other cast includes Marwan Kenzari, who plays the villainous uncle Jafar, Navid Negahban, Nasim Pedrad, and Billy Magnussen. The movie is directed by Guy Ritchie from a screenplay he co-wrote with John August. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich are the producers.
Meanwhile, Keanu Reeve’s starrer ‘John Wick: Chapter 3‘ collected $24.8M from 74 markets this weekend. The movie has a net gross of $74.4M from the global market. Warner Bros.’ live-action flick ‘Pokemon: Detective Pikachu‘ earned $24.3M from 72 markets this weekend. The movie has a worldwide gross of $352.9M until now.
Disney-Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’ rounded off a $15M from the international market over the weekend. The movie now stands at the path-breaking $1.88B mark. Disney distribution chief Cathleen Taff shared her excitement with Variety in the 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” Cinemascore for ‘Aladdin.’ “‘Aladdin’ is performing exactly the way we were hoping,” said Taff. “We should see strong performance in the coming weeks as we get into the summer season.”
