Designated Survivor – Netflix
Designated Survivor is back after its brief cancelation and finding a new home on Netflix for season 4. If you’ve blasted through its shorter 10-episode season, you’re probably wondering if and when season 5 is due out on Netflix. Here’s what we know and what we could expect from season 5 of Designated Survivor.
Let’s quickly recap and introduce the show if you’re not familiar. The show led by Kiefer Sunderland is a political drama which sees Tom Kirkman become President of the United States after a bomb hits Capitol Hill. Throughout the course of three seasons, the show has transitioned into a more traditional political show like Madam Secretary or House of Cards.
The transition to Netflix hasn’t been super smooth with some criticizing the shows new freedom to use profanity and introduce more mature subjects perhaps not best suited for network television. The creators and producers on the show tell a different story with them claiming it’s liberating to be on Netflix.
Has Designated Survivor been renewed for season 4 at Netflix?
Official renewal status: not yet renewed (last updated: 06/23/2019)
The show has yet to be a full renewal just yet. That’s not surprising as we’re currently expecting to hear about the future of the show sometime in July 2019.
Statistics for the show look good with it popping sitting at number 8 on IMDb’s most popular list weeks after its third season.
The show also inexplicitly sets up the fourth season as we’ll discuss in a little while.
Of course, it’s easy to draw comparisons to another recent Netflix pickup, Lucifer. That show was renewed a month after it released for a final season.
When will season 4 of Designated Survivor be on Netflix?
Naturally, without a renewal, it’s impossible to say at the moment. However, given the shows trimmed episode count and the team’s ability to produce the show on an annual basis, we are currently expecting season 4 of Designated Survivor to be on Netflix in mid-2020.
Don’t forget, South Korea has adapted the story and is due to release on Netflix around the world on July 1st, 2019.
What to expect from Designated Survivor Season 4
Although some argued the series faltered towards the middle of the season, it certainly ended on a bang and set up several plot points going forward.
Firstly, let’s start at the top level, President Kirkman won his election and lives to fight another four years in the Oval Office. However, with a potentially huge scandal now looming thanks to several of the ways Kirkman rose the polls are less than ideal or moral. Lorraine is likely now headed for jail for her involvement in an illegal hacking scandal and Emily may be on the line too. Heck, the President chose to keep information away to win. Could we potentially have an impeachment in season 4?
Next up, Aaron Shores relationship with Isabella will be strained through season 4 with the revelation that she’s now pregnant.
On a happier note, Kall Penn’s Seth is likely going to have a better season with him hooking up with his sperm donor child’s Mom at the end of this season.
