The dos and don’ts of mixing patterns and prints

Mixing patterns and prints

Mixing patterns and prints can be a fun and creative way to add interest and personality to your outfit. However, it can also be challenging to get it right without looking too busy or clashing. Here are some dos and don’ts to keep in mind when mixing patterns and prints:

Dos:

  1. Choose prints in the same color family: One way to make sure your outfit looks cohesive is to choose prints in the same color family. For example, you could mix a floral top with a polka dot skirt in complementary shades of blue.
  2. Mix patterns of different scales: To avoid overwhelming the eye, mix patterns of different scales. For example, pair a small polka dot shirt with a larger floral skirt.
  3. Balance bold prints with neutral pieces: If you’re nervous about mixing bold prints, try balancing them out with neutral pieces. For example, pair a statement floral blazer with black trousers and a plain white t-shirt.
  4. Use solid colors to break up patterns: You can also use solid colors to break up patterns and create a more balanced look. For example, pair a striped shirt with a solid color blazer and patterned shoes.

Don’ts:

  1. Mix too many prints at once: To avoid looking too busy, try to limit your outfit to two or three different prints. Any more than that and your outfit can start to look chaotic.
  2. Clashing colors: Be careful not to mix prints with clashing colors, as this can create a jarring effect. Stick to prints in complementary or analogous colors for a more harmonious look.
  3. Mixing prints with the same scale: Avoid mixing prints that are the same scale, as this can create a dizzying effect. For example, don’t pair a large floral top with a large polka dot skirt.
  4. Too many accessories: When mixing prints, it’s best to keep accessories to a minimum. Let the prints be the focal point of your outfit and keep jewelry and other accessories simple.
