George Clooney is set to direct and star in the upcoming Netflix feature adaptation the novel ‘Good Morning, Midnight’ by Lily Brooks-Dalton, the streamer announced Monday. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, the plot follows parallel stories of Augustine (Clooney), a lonely scientist lost in the Arctic region who tries to establish contact with a spacecraft called Aether. The untitled project is currently in pre-production, reports The Wrap.

The adaption marks Clooney’s first acting job in a film since the 2016 flick ‘Money Monster’ and his first directorial venture since ‘Suburbicon’ in 2017. Clooney will produce the project under his Smokehouse Pictures with Grant Heslov alongside Anonymous Content and Syndicate Entertainment.

“Grant and I couldn’t be more excited to be involved with this incredible project,” Clooney has been quoted as saying by THR, “Mark is a writer we’ve long admired and his script is haunting. We’re thrilled to be working with our friends at Netflix as well.”

“Having known and worked with George for over two decades, I can’t think of anyone better to bring this amazing story to life,” said Netflix’s Scott Stuber, “The book is powerful and moving, and Mark’s adaptation is beautifully written. At its core, this is a story about human nature, and one that I know our global audiences will fall in love with, just like I did when I read it.”

Mark L. Smith, who is best known for ‘The Revenant,’ adapted the screenplay. Filming is reportedly set to kick-start in October. Brooks-Dalton’s novel ‘Good Morning, Midnight’ was released in 2016 and went on to become one of the best books of the year.

Clooney’s recent projects include Hulu’s World War II miniseries ‘Catch-22.’ Based on the novel of the same name by Joseph Heller, the series is touted as a comedy-drama depicting the life of Capt. John Yossarian (played by Christopher Abbott) while Clooney plays the character of Lieutenant Scheisskopf. Other cast includes Kyle Chandler, Hugh Laurie, Daniel David Stewart, and Austin Stowell. Apart from playing one of the major roles, Clooney directs and executive produces the series.

The actor was last seen in the 2016 thriller ‘Money Master’ directed by Jodie Foster. Clooney plays the role of Lee Gates, a popular host who delivers investment tips and speculations on the New York stock markets to his viewers. His celebrity life takes a turn for worse when a viewer named Kyle Budwell (Jack O’Connell) goes bankrupt after following his tip.
