WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump found a Bush that likes him and made sure everyone knew about it on Wednesday.
The commander-in-chief brought George P. Bush, the Texas Land Commissioner and son of former presidential candidate Jeb Bush, on stage during an event in Crosby, Texas, where he signed two executive orders that will ease the construction of pipelines and other energy projects.
“This is the only Bush that likes me! This is the only one,” Trump said as he called George P. Bush to the stage. “This is the Bush that got it right. I like him.”
Trump’s joke came days after he responded to criticism leveled at him by former first lady Barbara Bush in a new book. Barbara Bush, who died a year ago this month, blamed Trump for aggravating her long battle with congestive heart failure and chronic pulmonary disease.
The book also revealed that Bush wrote in her son, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who lost in the primary to Trump, on her ballot in 2016 and that she kept a countdown clock marking the end of Trump’s term on a table next to her bed.
“I have heard that she was nasty to me, but she should be,” Trump told The Washington Times in response to the book. “Look what I did to her sons.”
Trump was responding to the former first lady’s remarks in The Matriarch: Barbara Bush and the Making of an American Dynasty, written by USA TODAY Washington Bureau chief Susan Page. Excerpts of the book were first published in USA TODAY.
Trump has had a testy relationship with the Bush family. He frequently criticized former President George W. Bush on the campaign trail in 2016. He also frequently derided former Jeb Bush dubbing him “low energy Jeb” during their primary battle.
Despite the hurdles, George P. Bush has maintained a relationship with the president’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr.
“Come here, I want to meet you,” Trump said as he introduced George P. Bush to the crowd. “This is a friend of my son and he’s a great guy. Truly, this is the Bush that got it right.”
After shaking hands, the president applauded George P. Bush, a fourth-generation politician in the Bush family.
“I like him. I like him,” Trump said. “He’s going far. He’s going places.”
George P. Bush, the Texas land commissioner, called for Republicans to rally behind Donald Trump.
