‘Collateral’ is a British drama and thriller series which has been written and created by David Hare and directed by S.J. Clarkson. This series is a four-part show, i.e. it contains only four episodes. It airs on BBC Two and first premiered on February 12, 2018, before being released internationally by Netflix on March 9, 2018. David Hare, who is the creator behind the series, felt he was propelled to write ‘Collateral’ as no one else was attempting to write about the issue of illegal immigration which the series places at its center.
In an interview, Hare said, “I think the movement of people is the biggest subject of the 21st Century and nobody’s writing about it. In the last few summers, we’ve had attempted mass migration from Libya, Syria, Iraq, Egypt, from everywhere. People are trying to get into Western Countries. And obviously, the West is trying to protect itself against the arrival of these people. This is going to play out in the coming years. I wanted to write about it as a matter of urgency.” This serves the basis as to why he created this TV series. He describes it as “a police procedural without any of that police attitudinizing”.
The premise of ‘Collateral’, thus, centers around London detectives who start by investigating what seems to be a random murder of a pizza delivery man. However, they soon come across interlocking circumstances that take them through a cross-section of British society. Upon release, critics said that the show was a provocative mystery that raised several questions but did not provide as many answers.
Collateral Cast: Who is in it?
‘Collateral’ has a sprawling cast, since many members come together to bring to light the complexity of the plot that unfurls along with the murder investigation. Carey Mulligan of ‘The Great Gatsby‘, ‘Drive‘ fame, leads the cast as Detective inspector Kip Glaspie. Ahd Kamel and July Namir respectively appear as Fatima and Mona Asif, the sisters of the murder victim, Abdullah Asif. Hayley Squires, known for ‘Call the Midwife‘ and ‘I, Daniel Blake‘, appears as Laurie Stone, the manager of Regal Pizza and Abdullah’s employer.
Collateral Plot: What is it about?
The four-part TV series launches its viewers into the middle of a mystery: An ordinary pizza delivery boy is shot twice in the head, which looks like it was done by a highly trained military assassin, but we don’t know why this happened in the first place. There are no immediate clues or hints as to why this shooting took place. There are only two witnesses to this vicious murder. One is that of a single mother who seems quite callous, and the other witness is a Vietnamese immigrant who is high and intoxicated on ketamine. As the story progresses, it introduces to the viewers an entire network of people who belong to different industries but are somehow connected.
The detective on call is Kip Glaspie who is sort of new to her job but can figure out certain things like the victim had a Middle Eastern name and that the crime had some precision behind it. What follows later on the series implicates a group of British institutions from the government to the media, military, and church of England and even further to the consequences of war led by the USA in places like Iraq and Afghanistan.
