The comparisons between a movie and a TV show are often a topic of discussion for the audience. What story would have worked better as a movie and what should have been turned into a TV show is pondered upon. It was perhaps this that gave rise to the trend of adapting popular films for television screens. FX’s ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ is the latest example of this trend. Bong Joon-ho’s 2013 film ‘Snowpiercer’ is ready to enter a similar territory. The film was critically acclaimed for its focus on various issues about society and humanity. The show is supposed to take that discussion farther.
The story itself is taken from a French graphic novel, ‘Le Transperceneige’, and the series was initially being developed for TNT. But after going through a couple of years of developmental hell, the production has picked up pace now, with some major changes. The series moved to TBS and has been commissioned for a second season, already. The pilot for the show was developed by Josh Friedman (‘War of the Worlds’, ‘Black Dahlia’), who was also supposed to be the showrunner. However, due to some “creative differences”, Friedman had to leave the project. Graeme Manson (‘Orphan Black’) joined the show as his replacement, and reportedly, made some major changes in the pilot’s storyline. Scott Derrickson (‘Doctor Strange’, ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still’) served as the director for it.
However, after Manson’s changes to the script, he was called for re-shoots. Derrickson decided to leave the show as he believed that Friedman’s version of the pilot was the best, and he wasn’t up to the task of extensive re-shoots. James Hawes (‘Doctor Who’, ‘Black Mirror’, ‘Penny Dreadful’) replaced him as the director, also joining the team as a co-producer. The show is executive produced by Bong Joon-ho, Dooho Choi, Marty Adelstein, Matthew O’Connor, Graeme Manson, Lee Tae-hun, Park Chan-wook (known for ‘The Handmaiden’ and ‘Oldboy’) and Becky Clements. With all the shuffles and replacements and whatnot, the dust (or should I say snow!) seems to have settled for the production of ‘Snowpiercer’ and the fans only have to wait for a little while before the series premieres.
Snowpiercer Cast: Who’s in It?
For a show that is supposed to tell an elaborate story, it makes sense for it to have a long list of characters, each of them acting as a piece of a puzzle that works towards bringing everything together. Daveed Diggs plays the role of Layton Well, who lives in the tail end of the train and becomes an important player in the revolution that changes the whole structure of how society works in it. Diggs is known for his roles in ‘Wonder’, ‘Black-ish’, ‘Blindspotting’, ‘Velvet Buzzsaw’ and ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’.
Jennifer Connelly appears as Melanie Cavill, a first-class passenger who makes the announcements on the train. Not that her name needs any introduction; Connelly is an Academy Award-winning actress who has gained the reputation through her roles in ‘A Beautiful Mind’, ‘Requiem for a Dream’, ‘Dark City’ and ‘Blood Diamond’. Mickey Summer plays the role of Bess Till, a member of the train’s security force who has to pick a side when the revolution begins. Summer is known for her roles in ‘Battle of the Sexes’, ‘The Meyerowitz Stories’, ‘American Made’ and ‘The Borgias’.
