While You Were Out is a reboot of the original reality show, with the same name, that aired on TLC between 2002 to 2006. The new season (technically, the revival and fifth installment of the show) premiered on March 16, 2019, as a collaboration between HGTV and TLC. While You Were Out is pretty similar to the format of Trading Spaces on TLC and Changing Rooms on BBC One. It is, in fact, a spinoff of the former show.

While You Were Out Cast: Who is in it?

This reality home-makeover series wis hosted by Ananda Lewis. She is an American TV personality, social activist, and model best known for her talk show The Ananda Lewis Show.

Former designers from TLC and HGTV/ DIY Network work in teams of two to work toward remodeling a home. The episodes of the show is tailored according to the TLC and HGTV audiences — with each episode airing at the same time on both networks. Designers from TLC are Carter Oosterhouse, Doug Wilson, Frank Bielec, Hildi Santo Tomas, Kahi Lee, Sabrina Soto, Ty Pennington, and Vern Yip. The HGTV segment includes Bristol and Aubrey Marunde, David Visentin, Hilary Farr, Karen Elaine, Mina Starsiak, Nicole Curtis, and Vanilla Ice.

The design teams compete against each other as they renovate neighboring houses. While the TLC episodes emphasize more on the relationship between the homeowner and the individual they want to surprise, the HGTV version focuses on the makeover process and the technical reasons behind design choices.

While You Were Out Plot: What is it about?

The central theme of While You Were Out revolves around a home makeover — which is planned as a surprise for an individual by his/her friend, close relative, or spouse. The latter plans the secret remodel and contacts designers from the show. During this process and when the actual renovation takes place, the former is sent away on a vacation or for any other reason — for a period of two days. In this time frame, the surprise planner invites the designers and with their help redecorates a certain room in the house. Sometimes, this may include outdoor areas, such as the garden or the backyard. The complete execution includes devising the design ideas, shopping for essentials, and then implementing the plan.

As this redecoration goes on, another crew member secretly tracks the person who has been sent away and records an interview with him/her. This tape is used to quiz the other individual who is at home, undergoing the remodel. If he/she wins it, he/she stands a chance to win a gift that will further enhance the interior decor. Toward the end of the show, the person who is being surprised returns to his/her home, and the reaction at seeing the new set-up is recorded. In turn, he/she is again quizzed in order to give the opportunity to win another prize.

Season 1-4 ran for a span of 211 episodes, with each installment evolving from its predecessor with certain revisions and changes. For example, season 1 featured four quizzes. Anna Bocci served as the host of the show, who was replaced by actress and writer Teresa Strasser later. Season 2 featured Evan Farmer as the host and also introduced new music and graphics to its episodes. It now held three quizzes as compared to four from the previous season. Season 3 witnessed an increase in budget, with homeowners becoming more involved in the redecoration process, and quizzes being totally removed toward the end episodes. The fourth and final season of this parent show ended on August 5, 2006.

The reboot version of While You Were Out is also be based on the same format. The only difference is that both the channels airs two different versions of the same show — in order to cater to the individual tastes of viewers on each network. The versions are created from the same raw footage recorded by Half Yard Productions. It also has an increased budget of $10,000 per room.

To give you a taste of what the show is like, let’s look at the first episode of the 2019 show. It features two best friends — Jen and Steph — who contact Hildi and Ty from TLC and Karen and Mina from HGTV to surprise their husband by creating football-themed rooms. Both the teams compete against each other in order to achieve the best remodel.

According to Allison Page, president, and general manager of HGTV, “This move shall bring back a popular series with a twist — allowing us to super-serve TLC and HGTV fans in the way they expect from those brands and collaborating as only Discovery can across two of the top three women’s networks in ad-supported cable.”

The unique plan for a crossover between the two lifestyle channels stemmed following the purchase of the above companies by Discovery. Since this move generated the need for increased cooperation between the brands, Kathleen Finch, Discovery’s chief lifestyle brands officer, wanted to create programs that combined similar themes across channels. As talks started between HGTV and TLC, both the networks confirmed their interest in the revival of the old series. There has already been a collaboration — Buddy Vs Duff — a cake-baking competition between TLC’s Cake Boss (featuring Buddy) and Food Network’s Ace of Cakes (featuring Duff).

While You Were Out Season 6 Release Date: When will it premiere?

While You Were Out Season 5 premiered on March 16, 2019 on both HGTV and TLC. As far as the next season goes, we don’t have an official announcement yet. Though considering the unique concept of the show, we would be surprised if it doesn’t get another season. Our best guess is that if the show does get renewed, While You Were Out Season 6 can release sometime in March 2020. We will update this section as soon as we hear more.
