‘People Magazine Investigates’, as the name suggests, revolves around horrible true crimes featured on the country’s leading weekly magazines. The documentary explores the incidents beyond the headlines, unraveling devastating stories of lives and families ripped apart as an aftermath. We all know about crimes that had shaken media and the general public alike, becoming a part of popular culture. This show analyses these stories via interviews with People’s journalists and with individuals connected to the investigation, which in turn sheds light on unexpected twists, new evidence, and shocking resolutions. It has also been developed into two spin-offs: ‘People Magazine Investigates: Cults’ and ‘People Magazine Investigate: Crimes of Fashion’.
Directed by Stephen Schuster, ‘People Magazine Investigates’ debuted on Investigation Discovery on November 7, 2016. A season 2 then followed by premiering on 5th November, 2017, which was again followed by a season 3 that started airing from 5th November 2018 onward. Here is all we know about the latest installment of the series.
People Magazine Investigates Cast: Who is in it?’
As we already mentioned, ‘People Magazine Investigates’ explores high-profile crimes that had made headlines on People Magazine. The show features interviews with the magazine’s writers and editors, and also holds emotional, revealing discussions with family and friends of the victims. Connected law authorities, detectives, FBI agents, and police investigators additionally make appearances across the episodes. While Steve Helling has served as one of the reporters in 23 episodes, David Christopher Wells has featured as a narrator in five episodes of the show.
People Magazine Investigates Plot: What is it about?
In order to give you a glimpse of the show, let’s see some of the cases featured on season 3. One of the incidents is about a fire chief’s wife whose burnt body is discovered in her home. However, an autopsy unravels that the death is not caused by fire but by a gunshot on the head. The killer has still not been caught. Next is the case in Philadelphia when in 1998, the murdered corpse of a grad student is found on her bed. The cops try to re-investigate a series of connected and unsolved cases that had haunted the town earlier in an attempt to catch the perpetrator. Yet another incident is the mysterious disappearance of an 11-year-old girl in Arizona. It’s clear that she has been kidnapped, but to date, neither she nor her abductor have been discovered.
The series then takes us back to 2002 when a 12-year-old girl from Oregon City suddenly vanishes when she in on her way to school. However, more complications arise when another girl goes missing in the same fashion. Another episode explores the case of Mike Williams, who goes duck hunting and never returns. The strange disappearance takes 10 years to be solved. Yet again, during the summer of 1980, a teenage boy goes out for a run and his family receives his savagely beaten and dead body later. Police investigation then reveals an unsettling story.
One more case shown here is about three women, from three different decades, who are murdered or disappear under similar circumstances. However, they all have one thing in common — they fall in love with the same man. And cops are now forced to investigate the matter. Again, in Texas, an entire family is gunned down when they are celebrating a certain event in their home. Investigators soon unravel a conspiracy, which leads them to apprehend a shrewd, revengeful criminal mastermind.
