‘Jessica Jones’ released in the year 2015 and has since blossomed under the radar of mainstream television. The show is based on the comic book character of the same name, as part of the build-up to ‘The Defenders‘ cinematic universe. It stars Krysten Ritter of ‘Breaking Bad‘ fame as the titular character with several other regulars in worthy roles. While the show has remained conservative with the awards and hype it has received, it has been acclaimed by critics and audiences alike for its dark tone and “approach to sexuality, and depiction of darker topics such as rape, assault, and PTSD”.

The series has been created by Melissa Rosenberg who has worked on the ‘Twilight‘ franchise, and ‘Dexter‘. It airs on Netflix and first premiered on November 20, 2015. It is a delectable mixture of various genres including crime drama, psychological thriller, neo-noir, with aspects of detective and superhero tropes. The series has been praised by critics who have said, “Jessica Jones builds a multifaceted drama around its engaging antihero, delivering what might be Marvel’s strongest TV franchise to date”.

If you are a fan of detective fiction, and I am, having done some research on it, you will realize that this show takes the tropes of a hardboiled detective, and adds a feminist spin to it. We have the lone detective with an alcohol problem who refuses to reach out and plays tough. This detective barely gets by, taking cases to make ends meet, and acts as much as a voyeur as a detective. The cityscape is seen through the eyes of the said detective, a seedy, sleazy area where various actions of questionable ethics and legality take place. The very theme music of the show is reminiscent of the era of America’s private eyes and the rise of pulp detective novels. Except, our detective is Jessica Jones, a woman, and a superhero. Naturally, the show drew a lot of fans, because even if you are not familiar with the comics or acquainted with the superhero’s stories like I wasn’t, there is no way you can walk away without appreciating the noirish tone the entire show sets, right down to the villain who almost cannot be taken down and forces the hero to cross a line.

Jessica Jones Cast: Who is in it?

The main cast of ‘Jessica Jones’ includes Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones. She is a superhero who now runs an investigation agency, Alias Investigations, and suffers from PTSD. Rachael Taylor appears as Patricia “Trish” Walker, a child star who is now Jessica’s best friend. Though she does not have superpowers on the show, she believes in the same things as Jessica and acts as a mirror to her. Notably, Marvel fans might be interested to know that the initial plan was to have Carol Danvers be Jessica’s friend on the show since they are the best of friends in the comics.

However, when plans were made for Danvers to have her own film, that is, ‘Captain Marvel‘, Trish became Jessica’s on-screen bestie. Other main characters include Eka Darville as Malcolm Ducasse, Jessica’s neighbor who fights a drug addiction problem to eventually help her on cases, and Carrie-Anne Moss as Jeri Hogarth, a high-powered attorney who often hires Jessica to do the investigative groundwork for her cases. David Tennant of ‘Doctor Who’ fame appears as Kilgrave, a man from Jessica’s past who can control minds. Kilgrave used his powers to manufacture consent, gaslight, and rape Jessica, leading to her PTSD and setting up a strong feminist narrative where he becomes the personification of the toxic patriarchy that must be smashed. Mike Colter appears as Luke Cage, who also has his own show. He and Jessica briefly had a thing when she ran into him during the course of one of her investigations.

The third season of the show added Benjamin Walker (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter), Jeremy Bobb (Russian Doll), Sarita Choudhury (Homeland), Tiffany Mack (Hap and Leonard), Jessica Frances Dukes (The Good Wife), and Aneesh Sheth (New Amsterdam) to the already impressive cast.

Jessica Jones Plot: What is it about?

The plot of ‘Jessica Jones’ revolves around Jessica who tries to rebuild her life as a private investigator after her career as a superhero comes to an end. Dealing with PTSD, she takes cases trying to help people in her own way. While the first season of the show was remarkable, literally taking a strong feminist narrative and putting it in the superhero genre by pitting Jessica against Kilgrave, the second season was more of a slow burner, but it went into greater depth about the character of Jessica, and we realized how at the core of all that rough exterior, was a woman who really cared about others. The sophomore season was a slow burner but was well crafted to flesh out all the characters. One of the most notable developments was Trish’s newfound powers, which might lead to some falling out between her and Jessica in the upcoming season.

In the third season, when Jessica crosses paths with a highly intelligent psychopath, she and Trish repair their fractured relationship and team up to take him down. But a devastating loss reveals their conflicting ideas of heroism and sets them on a collision course that will forever change them both.

Jessica Jones Season 4 Release Date: When will it premiere?

‘Jessica Jones’ Season 3 premiered on June 13, 2018. On February 18, 2019, Netflix announced that the third will be the final season of the show. Though, fans should not lose all their hopes. The cancellation was always part of Netflix’s plan to cut out all Marvel shows since they are headed to Disney’s new streaming platform anyway. So, there’s still a possibility that Disney+  picks up the show. If that happens, we will update you about ‘Jessica Jones’ Season 4 release date.
