Have you experienced that chilling feeling when you are sitting around a campfire and one of your friends is telling a horror story? As kids I used to love those horror story sessions, often wondering if ghosts exist. Many a times, we also discussed going on ghost hunting. It seems like acclaimed Indian director Sujoy Ghosh decided to turn our imaginations into a horror show. ‘Typewriter’, a supernatural thriller, follows a group of kids as they embark on a ghost-hunting mission in Goa. With a tagline of “A story to die for”, this show is Netflix’s latest foray into Indian thrillers.

Typewriter Cast: Who is in it?

The cast of ‘Typewriter’ features Purab Kohli, Palomi Ghosh, and Sameer Kochhar in the lead roles. The trio is accompanied by a group of 9-year-old kids, portrayed by Aarna Sharma, Aaryansh Malviya, Mikail Gandhi, and Palash Kamble. Other actors in supporting roles include KC Shankar, Bijou Thaangjam, and Meenacshi Martins.

Typewriter Plot: What is it about?

‘Typewriter’ is an Indian web television series that is set in Goa. The story is centered around a haunted mansion and a mysterious book that grabs the attention of a crew of wannabe ghost hunters. Yes, amidst the center of all the action is this group of kids who embark on a mission to capture a malevolent spirit in their neighborhood. But a twist is introduced when a new family moves into the Bardez Villa, causing the house’s past to unravel with dangerous consequences.

The tale begins with a police officer, who is attempting to decipher the cause behind a series of mysterious deaths around the Bardez Villa. He discovers that there’s one common element which links all these incidents — a girl who seems to trigger the unnatural happenings. Now, after a group of nine-year-old kids reads a haunted book, ‘The Ghost of Sultanpore’, their imagination reaches a tipping point. They make it a mission to capture the spirit that inhabits the infamous mansion in their Goan locality. However, their quest is interrupted when a new family and their daughter move into the house. With so many events happening all at once, the group finds its increasingly difficult to balance their school schedules and the demands of this urgent job in hand.

Taking inspiration from ‘Stranger Things‘ and Ghosh’s love for Enid Blyton, it comes as no surprise that the heroes here are these meddling bunch of kids. When they learn about the latest death in town they resolve to tackle the mystery. One kid even claims that when someone dies an unnatural death, the “soul is trapped between universes”. The soul referred to here is of the mysterious girl who is the only link to all the murders and supposedly lived in the villa before the events unfold. And yes, there’s a typewriter as well, which seems to harbor plenty of untold secrets.

So, after reading the synopsis, it is evident by now that this is a tale which embraces the popular premise of a haunted villa and the spirit of its past owner returning to seek revenge. But what makes it exciting is that it comes from National-Award-winning director and writer Sujoy Ghosh, who is the man behind the gripping thriller, ‘Kahaani’, starring Vidya Balan. His venture into short films includes his much-appreciated ‘Ahalya’, featuring Radhika Apte. Hence, we are definitely looking forward to this one and can’t wait to see how Ghosh tackles a concept that’s as old as time itself!

Typewriter Season 1 Release Date: When will it premiere?

‘Typewriter’ season 1 premieres on Netflix on July 19, 2019. Its first run comprises five episodes and all the parts release on the same date on the platform. After Netflix’s noteworthy success with Indian titles, such as the dystopian drama, ‘Leila‘, sports series, ‘Selection Day‘, and crime series, ‘Sacred Games’, it is evident that the concept of long-form format is doing pretty well for Indian programming, though it is relatively new among the country’s audience. In fact, the streaming network is constantly strengthening its grip on original content from India.

Taking into account well-performing Indian Netflix originals, we can safely say that ‘Typewriter’ offers a lot of promise. We are indeed excited to see the appreciation generated by this latest addition. We are yet to know if the story offers a definite conclusion or leaves some loose threads to allow the tale to go on. If it is the latter and if the creators do see a positive response, they would definitely consider a renewal. And if that happens, Typewriter’ season 2 release date should fall sometime in July 2020. We shall update this section with a more concrete timeline as and when we learn about the official schedule.
