The superhero movie earned an impressive $111M this weekend from Asian markets such as China, Japan and Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, the movie set a new record for Sony with $3.8M weekend gross. ‘Far From Home’ will hit screens all other markets this weekend with an exception to Italy, where the movie will reach only on July 10.
Set for a domestic release on July 2, the movie eyes to hit a 6-day opening gross of $120-160 million. ‘Homecoming’ got a $154M haul in its first six days at the domestic box office in July 2017. The movie rounded out its theatrical run with a $334M domestic and $880M international gross.
‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ follows Peter Parker (Tom Holland) to Europe for a school trip with his friends. Parker battles with his strong emotions after the loss of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) following the events of ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ Though he tries to reconnect with his world through his love interest MJ (Zendaya) and the fundraising campaigns organized by his aunt May Parker (Marisa Tomei), Parker is yet to come to terms with the void left by Stark.
But his European vacation is interrupted by an unexpected visit from Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), who wants Spider-Man to join forces with the shadowy Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) in their fight against the Elementals. The new developments place Spider-Man at crossroads of his future trajectory and the fourth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
‘Homecoming’ director Jon Watts returns along with screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers for ‘Far From Home.’ Other cast includes Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, J. B. Smoove as Mr. Dell, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, and Martin Starr as Mr. Harrington. The movie is produced by Columbia Pictures along with Marvel Studios and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing.
