Netflix and The Jim Henson Company are currently producing a prequel series to the 1982 fantasy film The Dark Crystal. For those that don’t know of The Dark Crystal here is the What’s on Netflix guide to The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
Jim Henson’s 1982 classic the Dark Crystal is a masterpiece of storytelling and puppetry. The Dark Crystal at the time was one of the most ambitious and expensive films ever made. With groundbreaking animatronics and film making techniques, Jim Henson’s classic is still one of the most visually captivating films of all time.
The story of The Dark Crystal takes place on the desolate planet of Thra. The ancient and evil race of Skesis rules the planet with an iron fist by using the power of the Dark Crystal. Before the Skesis can use the power of the crystal to grant themselves immortality a young Gelfing named Jen must restore a missing shard of the Crystal before the alignment of the 3 suns.
What is The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance?
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is a prequel series to 1982 classic The Dark Crystal. Taking place prior to the events of The Dark Crystal, the story is centered around 3 Gelflings that discover the source of the evil Skesis power. Upon learning the vile creatures secret the trio undergoes a legendary quest to ignite the fires of rebellion and save the world of Thra.
Instead of CGI, the Jim Henson Company will honor the work of which the company was built upon by using puppets and animatronics. Using the latest and state of the art equipment The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is going to be beautiful.

How many episodes will the first season air?
There will be a total of 10 episodes with each with a roughly 30 minute run time. Planning on binging? Make sure to set aside of least 5 hours.
Where is production up to with The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance?
Thanks to an article released by EW we now have an indication of just how far into production the series is. With some exclusive pictures from the news site (see in the gallery below), the Jim Henson Company have once again captured the magic of the original classic tale.
By now filming is close to or already has concluded. According to IMDb, the series has been in post-production since December 2018. There will be a ton of editing that’ll go into The Dark Crystal and we can expect some astounding voice work and an amazing score to accompany the series.

Now that we know of the release date, we can expect to see a trailer release soon! For now, you’ll still have to settle for the teaser trailer.
Will there be a second season to The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance?
As of the time of writing, there are no plans for a second season. This, of course, depends on where the story finishes for the first season but taking into consideration that the series is a prequel to the 1982 film the story may only require one. Netflix hasn’t listed the series as limited so watch this space.
There is a 12 issue sequel comic series to the Dark Crystal that could be adapted into a film.

The first season of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will be arriving on Friday the 30th of August!
