Fox has finally released the first trailer for the long-awaited sci-fi flick ‘Ad Astra.’ The Brad Pitt-starring space epic has been long been in development. The trailer reveals Pitt as an astronaut Roy McBride who embarks on a dangerous adventure in search of his long-lost father into the uncharted dark areas of the universe. Tommy Lee Jones plays the role of Roy’s missing father, Clifford McBride. He disappeared twenty years ago while leaving earth in search of advanced extraterrestrial life near the mysterious planet of Neptune.

Meanwhile, Roy’s mission unravels a deadly secret that may bring the end of the world along with a complete wipe-out of humanity from the face of Earth. “All life could be destroyed,” McBride is told in the trailer. “We’re counting on you to find out what’s happening out there.” Directed by James Gray, the movie follows Roy who ends up revealing the mysterious facts that challenge the existence of the human race. He also learns that his father Clifford McBride was associated with some dangerous experiments in the outer space.

Liv Tyler, Donald Sutherland and Ruth Negga also play major roles in the movie. Gray has compared ‘Ad Astra’ to Joseph Conrad’s classic novella ‘Heart of Darkness’ earlier. “I’m terrified by it. The science-fiction genre is so tricky because there are elements of fantasy usually involved, and there are also fantastical elements,” he told Collider in 2017. “What I’m trying to do is the most realistic depiction of space travel that’s been put in a movie and to basically say, ‘Space is awfully hostile to us.’ It’s kind of Heart of Darkness story about travelling to the outer edge of our solar system. I have a lot of hopes for it but it is certainly ambitious.”

The movie marks Gray’s first directorial venture since ‘The Lost City of Z.’ Gray co-wrote the script with Ethan Gross. ‘Ad Astra’ is produced by Regency Enterprises in association with Fox. Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, James Gray, Anthony Katagas, Rodrigo Teixeira, and Arnon Milchan join the project as producers. 20th Century Fox originally lined up the movie for January 11, 2019 release, before it was pushed back to May 24. Later, Disney moved the release date again to September after its acquisition of Fox. The movie is now set to hit theatres on September 20, 2019.
