Warner Bros. has dropped the first trailer for the upcoming sequel to the horror classic ‘The Shining.’ Titled as ‘Doctor Sleep,’ the movie features Ewan McGregor as adult Danny Torrance, who is the son of Jack Nicholson’s character in the 1980 movie ‘The Shining,’ directed by Stanley Kubrick. ‘Doctor Sleep,’ which is written and directed by Mike Flanagan (‘The Haunting of Hill House‘), picks up the storyline 40 years after the events of ‘The Shining.’ Even after many years, Torrance is still haunted by harrowing memories from the hotel Overlook. The first movie was adapted from the horror novel of the same name by Stephen King.
“When I was a kid, I bumped into these things. I don’t know about magic. I always called it the shining,” Torrance reflects on those days in the trailer.
Moreover, he battles with a drinking problem and the weird psychic powers in the first look. When Torrance crosses paths with a mysterious young girl Abra Stone (Kyliegh Curran), he soon establishes a psychic connection with her which turns the lives of the couple upside down. ‘Doctor Sleep’ is adapted from the 2013 sequel novel by Stephen King.
“We pick up Dan in New Jersey and in the throes of his alcoholism, kind of right at rock bottom is where we meet him,” Mike Flanagan is quoted as saying by EW. “He’s nomadic, he’s violent, he’s crawled so far into a bottle that there doesn’t seem to be an easy way out. It’s really kind of a strange experience to meet your hero kind at their most awful version of themselves. Structurally, it’s really fascinating, from a writing point of view. We pick up Dan at the lowest point of his life, and, more than anything, this is a story about his redemption and trying to avoid repeating the same fate that his father had to deal with, outside of the hotel, just with his own addiction,” he added.
Both the movies share some interesting similarities in terms of the iconography. Torrance is seen transporting back to the historic Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies in the trailer. When he sticks his head through the hole in the bathroom door, it becomes a tribute to one of the iconic scenes in the history of the horror genre as well as Jack Nicholson who made the character Jack immortal.
Rebecca Ferguson (‘Mission: Impossible‘) plays the role of Rose the Hat, the chief antagonist in the movie. The other cast includes Carl Lumbly, Zahn McLarnon, Emily Alyn Lind, Bruce Greenwood, Jocelin Donahue, Alex Essoe, and Cliff Curtis. ‘Doctor Sleep’ hits theaters on November 8, 2018.
