What/If Season 2: Netflix Renewal Status and Release Date
After what appears to be a successful first outing for Netflix’s anthology series What/If, fans of the series will undoubtedly be hoping for another season. But has Netflix renewed What/If? Will the story of What/If continue? And, when can we expect to see the second season of What/If? Let’s find out.
What/If is a Netflix Original Thriller anthology series created by Mike Kelley. Actress Renée Zellweger starred in her first lead role in television series and smashed it out of the park. While the series hasn’t garnered the best of praise from critics, Renée’s performance has been continuously highlighted as the star attraction of What/If. The critic’s response aside, it’s what the subscribers like that matter most.
When two newlyweds strike up a deal with a notoriously shrewd businesswoman, their lives begin to cascade out of control. As the ripple effect of their decision takes hold, events transpire changing the lives of not just themselves but of everyone around them. What are you willing to sacrifice?
What/If Season 2 Netflix Renewal Status
Official Netflix Renewal Status: Pending (Last Updated: 28/05/2019)
Only in the most extravagant of cases does Netflix renew a series within a month of release. We’ll likely be waiting of least a month or two before news on the future of What/If. The reason why it takes time for Netflix to come to a decision is that they need time to gather all the viewing data on the series, along with whether or not subscribers actually enjoyed the series.
Some of the data Netflix looks at in great detail is the number of subscribers that start the show but never finish the series. This could mean you begin the first episode and turn it off after 30 minutes or you could watch nine episodes but never view the finale. All of this is taken into account when Netflix executives decide to renew or bin a series.
Does the story warrant another season?
First of all, if you’ve paid attention to the preview we wrote for the series or what was written above you’ll know that What/If is an ‘Anthology’ series. So whether or not the story could last a second season, the fact What/If is listed as an anthology should mean the next season will introduce a brand new story and a new cast.
But fans will be happy to hear that due to the wording of how Netflix has listed the first season of What/If suggests the story isn’t over just yet. What do we mean by this? Well, Netflix has purposefully listed the first season of What/If as ‘Part 1’, suggesting that there will, in fact, be a Part 2.
What this effectively means is the first season will likely be split into two halves and we could expect to see Part 2 sometime in the future.
How have subscribers taken to What/If?
Despite an IMDb rating of 6.7, overall subscribers seemed to take to What/If extremely well.
I mean What/If on Netflix is *the* definition of addictive, binge-able TV – the drama is v real guys and Renée Zellweger is as great as ever at playing every fool who crosses her. Recommend for a twisty, melodramatic weekend binge! #WhatIf pic.twitter.com/A2alWEPSk0

What/If Season 2 Netflix Release Date
If there is going to be a ‘Part 2’ then the filming of it hasn’t begun. Some shows such as the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina take a small break in between the filming of each ‘Part’ but filming does take place back to back. By looks of things What/If has not been filmed back to back.
Filming of Part 1 took place from January 10th and likely concluded sometime around mid-April. The release date is dictated by when renewal is given. It’s likely most of the groundwork has been laid for the next season, but some elements of pre-production will have to take place before filming can begin. Assuming the story will continue then we could see a potential Winter release date.
If the writers decide to opt for a brand new story (it’s an anthology after all) then this complicates matters. A brand new story will need to be written, new cast members to be found and potentially a change in location for filming.
Potential release date: Late 2019 / Early 2020
