What are Fashion and Feminism?
What are Fashion and Feminism?
170 years of contradicting conclusions about what it means for a woman to be a woman.
Fashion is something that we deal with every day. Even those who claim they don’t care about what clothes they wear, they choose clothes that reflect their feelings and show how they feel every day.
Change is the only constant in fashion. Every day, we are bombarded by new fashion ideas via music, television, books, and videos. The movies also have an impact on the fashion choices of people. After Men In Black, Ray-Ban’s sunglasses sales increased. Sometimes, a trend spreads across the globe. In the 1950s, teens all over the world wore Elvis Presley costumes.
“A little bit of what you call frippery can make you look like the rest of us.”
-Abigail Adams letter to John Adams May 1, 1780
what fashion is
Who decides what fashion is?
The fashion choices we make have been influenced by musicians and other cultural icons, royalty, and political figures. Magazines and newspapers report on Hillary Clinton’s outfits. The fashion world was devastated by the recent passing of Diana, Princess of Wales. Her clothes were a daily story.
What does it mean to be a feminist?
The literal meaning is equality of the sexes. It is much more challenging to grasp what this means at an individual level. Are you supposed to accept or reject your femininity if you are a woman who believes in inequality? This internal and external struggle was manifested in the clothes women wore or refused to wear.
Feminist movements have been around for 170 years. Throughout that time, fashion has changed drastically. However, the overarching question has remained the same: What does being a woman mean? And how should women dress?
