Great things happen when two popular genres merge. Based on the novel of the same name written by Daniel O’Malley, ‘The Rook’ tells the story of a spy while adding strong supernatural elements in it. Set in Britain, it follows the story of a woman who wakes up with amnesia to discover that she works for a secret organisation that saves the country from supernatural threats. The show depicts her quest to find out the truth about herself as well as solving a key mystery, an answer to which will bring down a lot of people in power.

The book was adapted for Starz by Stephanie Meyer, the author of the ‘Twilight’ series. However, after the production began on the first two episodes, Meyer departed the project. The reason behind her leaving the show is attributed to creative differences between her and the network about the kind of story they wanted to tell. The separation is reported to be an amicable affair without any bad blood between the author and the network. The episodes of ‘The Rook’ are directed by China Moo-Young, Kari Skogland, Sunu Gonera and Rebecca Johnson. The writing credits go to Sam Holcroft, Ali Muriel and Daniel O’Malley. Holcroft and Muriel also serve as executive producers alongside Stephen Garrett, Karyn Usher and Lisa Zwerling. Steve Clark-Hall and Amanda Tudesco serve as the producers of the show.

The Rook Plot: What’s It About?

There is a threat that looms on the world, unknown to most people. Supernatural beings walk among us and their powers pose a threat to normal humans. In order to safeguard everyone’s interest and protect the country from any foreign or domestic supernatural threats, an organization has been established. It is known as the Checquy. Though ordinary people are also a part of it, the main role is played by the people who have supernatural powers. The stronger your gift, the higher the rank you are eligible for. Myfanwy Thomas is a Rook in the organization. Her power is the ability to control people’s mind with the simple act of touch. Though this presents a lot of possibilities for her to rise up the ladder, she is unable to do so because of her timid nature. But that is all gone now.

The story begins with Myfanwy waking up in a park with no memory whatsoever of herself or the world. She receives a note which informs her about the complicated situation she is in. Turns out, this person is just occupying Myfanwy’s body. In reality, he/she is a completely different person and should have had a different body if not for this mysterious situation. She has two options now: she can go back to her previous life, to find out whatever it was and what was it she knew that someone wanted her to forget so badly; or, she could just walk away and start another life. Naturally, she goes with the first option. While keeping her amnesia a secret from everyone in the organization, she tries to uncover the identity of the enemies who want to bring down Checquy. The task might become too difficult to handle for her, especially when she doesn’t have anyone to help her. There is no one she can trust.
