There have been a lot of shows about politics: the dirty politicians who do unimaginable things to rise to power, the good ones who face a constant struggle between ambition and morality, the kingmakers, and all those involved in this treacherous business. However, these stories are so indulged in what goes on in politics that they rarely turn their attention towards the citizens who are directly affected by whatever policies the people in government impose on them.

‘Years and Years’ gives a lot of thought to that and this is what makes the show different, and better than others in the genre. The series is created by Russel T Davies (‘Queer as Folk’, ‘Doctor Who’), and it follows the story of a family over the course of fifteen years to measure the impact of a politician’s beliefs on them. The show premieres in the UK on BBC One while HBO handles the airing in the United States. Simon Cellan Jones and Lisa Mulcahy directed the series. Jones also executive produces the show alongside Michaela Fereday, Lucy Richer and Nicola Shindler. Karen Lewis serves as the producer.

Years and Years Cast: Who’s in It?

At the centre of the story of ‘Years and Years’ is Vivienne Rook, portrayed by Emma Thompson, a successful businesswoman who turns her eyes towards politics. One of the best British actresses (or of the whole world, for that matter) of all time, Thompson is known for playing roles that don’t usually conform to gender norms. She is the winner of two Academy Awards — one for Best Actress, one for Best Adapted Screenplay, one Primetime Emmy, three BAFTAs and two Golden Globes. Some of her best-known works include her roles in ‘Howard’s End’, ‘Sense and Sensibility’, ‘In the Name of the Father’, ‘The Remains of the Day’, ‘Harry Potter series’, ‘Nanny McPhee’, ‘Love Actually’, ‘Men in Black 3’, ‘Saving Mr Banks’, ‘Brave’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’.

Oliver Award winner, Rory Kinnear plays the role of Stephen Lyons, who works as a financial advisor. He has also worked in ‘The Casual Vacancy’, ‘Penny Dreadful’, ‘Count Arthur Strong’, ‘Southcliff’, the ‘Bond’ movies — ‘Quantum of Solace’, ‘Sky Fall’, ‘Spectre’, ‘Trespass Against Us’, ‘The Imitation Game’ and ‘Broken’. She is known for her roles in films and TV shows like ‘Hatton Garden’, ‘Marcella’, ‘Witless’, ‘Born to Kill’, ‘Death in Paradise’, ‘Guilt’, ‘Cucumber’ and ‘Cry Me A River’.

Russell Tovey is cast in the role of Stephen’s younger brother, Daniel Lyons. He is best known for his role of George Sands, a werewolf, in the supernatural drama, ‘Being Human’. He has also worked in ‘Quantico’, ‘Banished’, ‘Looking’, ‘The Job Lot’, ‘The Dog Rescuers’, ‘Sherlock’, ‘Doctor Who Confidential’, ‘Him and Her’, ‘Little Dorrit’ and ‘Mindhorn’.

Two times BAFTA winner Jessica Hynes plays the role of Daniel and Stephen’s sister, Edith. She works as a political activist. She has also worked in ‘Spaced’, ‘The Royle Family’, ‘Paddington 2’, ‘Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason’ and ‘Bridget Jones’ Baby’, ‘There She Goes’ and ‘Doctor Who’. Ruth Madeley plays the role of the youngest Lyon sibling, Rosie. He is known for his roles in ‘Hollyoaks’, ‘Mr Bean’s Holiday’ and ‘Rome’.

Years and Years Plot: What’s It About?

Vivienne Rook is a charismatic politician. She was a businesswoman before she switched careers. She is known for her radical, if not outrageous, views on major political issues and has succeeded in gaining the attention of the media and the whole country owing to her interviews and the jaw-dropping statements she makes in them. Alongside, we see the story of the Lyons family. The four siblings — Stephen, Daniel, Edith, and Rosie — have normal lives with normal problems. They go about their usual business like everyone else. However, the world is changing around them, bit by bit. The growing influence of Rook in the politics of the country is a testament to that. While they joke about it now, in fifteen years, they’ll look back and wonder where the red sirens had started to go off.

Years and Years Season 1 Release Date: When Will It Premiere?

‘Years and Years’ Season 1 is set to premiere on HBO on June 24, 2019. The series has already premiered in the UK on BBC One on May 14. It has received a lot of praise for concocting a story that takes the current political state of the world and presents a critique of where we are headed to. The humour blended with the seriousness of the issues only amplifies the effect, as it delivers a story that is as important as it is entertaining. The performance of the cast was equally applauded, for the ease of the actors to bring something to their characters that the viewers can relate to. There hasn’t been any word from the BBC about the next season of the show. As soon as we receive any news on that, we will update this section.

Years and Years Trailer:

If you were separating yourself from politics because you think it is too shi**y for you to indulge in, or maybe because you think it doesn’t affect you that much, then ‘Years and Years’ will change your opinion. ‘Black Mirror’ might seem diluted in front of this. You can catch all its episodes on HBO. Watch the ‘Years and Years’ Season 1 trailer here to see what you’re getting into:
