‘Luther’ is a British psychological crime drama television series that airs on BBC One. Created and written by British novelist and screenwriter Neil Cross, ‘Luther’ follows the titular character, Detective Chief Inspector (DCI) John Luther, as he goes across England solving vicious and violent crimes.

A relatively old show, Season 1 of ‘Luther’, consisting of six episodes, first made its way to viewers’ screens on May 4, 2010, and was strongly praised by critics and audiences alike. Understandably, BBC renewed the show for a four-episode second season, which premiered on June 14, 2011. Season 2 received even more praise than Season 1, and subsequently, BBC renewed the show for another four-episode season. Season 3 premiered two years later on July 2, 2013, and was followed by a two-episode special Season 4, which premiered on December 15, 2015, Then, after a lull of four years, ‘Luther’ returned again with with a four-episode Season 5, which premiered on January 1, 2019.

With Season 5 having stunned viewers and critics into awe again, everyone’s wondering whether ‘Luther’ will return for Season 6. Here’s everything we know about it.

Luther Cast: Who is in it?

The titular character, DCI John Luther is played by none other than the charismatic and intense Idris Elba. Joining Elba’s side is Ruth Wilson, who plays Alice Morgan, a brilliant scientist with a murderous streak who comes to Luther’s aid every now and then.

Other cast members who get considerable screen time include Warren Brown as Detective Sergeant Justin Ripley, Dermot Crowley as Detective Superintendent Martin Schenk, Indira Varma as Luther’s estranged wife Zoe Luther, Paul McGann as Mark North, Steven MacKintosh as DCI Ian Reed, Nikki Amuka-Bird as DCI Erin Gray, Michael Smiley as Benny “Deadhead” Silver, and Saskia Reeves as Detective Superintendent Rose Teller. Additionally, the show has myriad other cast members who play minor characters who make recurring and episodic appearances.

It should be noted here that the appearance of the aforementioned characters are not guaranteed in every season, and over the five seasons that have aired, these characters have featured every now and then depending on each episode’s story arc. If ‘Luther’ does make a comeback with a sixth season, we expect at least Idris Elba and Ruth Wilson to reprise their roles.

Luther Plot: What is it about?

‘Luther’ is a rather dark psychological crime drama that follows DCI John Luther and some his cases with the Metropolitan Police Service’s Serious Crimes Unit (SCU). A legendary figure on the force, Luther later gets transferred to the fictional Serious and Serial Crimes Unit (SSCU). As far as Luther’s reputation goes, he is show to be an extremely dedicated detective who is obsessive, driven, and has a propensity for violence. While Luther’s dedication to his work is one of his biggest strengths, it also exacts a heavy toll on him as he can never completely dissociate himself from his cases, and as a result he feels consumed by the dark world he deals with. Luther is also shown to have some disregard for police protocol, and is often seen using illegal means such as breaking in without warrants and physical intimidation to solve crimes. On the whole, Luther is shown to be a rather grey character who has an aversion towards firearms and killing, but is willing to go to any other length to nab vicious criminals.

While the show largely focuses on Luther solving vicious murders, it also revolves around his rather unorthodox relationship with the brilliant yet murderous Alice Morgan. In the very first episode of the show, Luther investigates a double murder by Alice, and despite being sure of her guilt, he is unable to prove it. What follows is a tumultuous relationship with Alice, who relentlessly pursues her infatuation with the detective. Ultimately, Luther relents, and in the process starts gleaning insights on crimes from Alice, whose genius-level IQ and own criminal history allows her to look at crimes from the criminal’s point of view.

As the show progresses, Luther is also drawn into a vicious world of corruption and murder, which includes the murder of his own estranged wife, Zoe, and his protege, Justin Ripley. As Luther struggles to find a foothold in this topsy-turvy world, Alice again comes to his aid. With each season, Luther is forced to confront the increasingly murky depths of human depravity, making the show an intensely psychological one that forces viewers to ask several questions.

Unsurprisingly thus, ‘Luther’ has been a massive hit among television critics – the show enjoys an overall Rotten Tomatoes score of 90%, with Seasons 1 and 5 enjoying scores above 90%, and Season 2 having a perfect score of 100%. Viewers, too, have absolutely loved the show, and it has a solid overall rating of 8.5/10 on IMDb.

Luther Season 6 Release Date: When is it coming out?

‘Luther’ season 5 released on June 2, 2019. The season 4 that had released in January, 2019, saw a massive average UK viewe rship of 9.45 million – its highest ever. That prompted BBC to readily renew the show for a fifth season. Now the question is whether the show will be renewed for another season.

While BBC has yet to announce anything, Idris Elba has hinted at other plans for ‘Luther’, and there’s also a possibility of a film adaptation. Speaking on the future of the show, Elba said, “I don’t think we’re going to do too many TV versions of it; I think the next step is to make a film. We’ve got a skeleton of an idea for a film. And I’m not allowed to say too much but I can say that this season [Season 5] has the film very much in its sights. If there is a film, then it will be somehow connected to this season.”

So, that’s a clear indication which way the show is heading. But keep in mind that Elba may not have a final say in this. The network might still decide to go with sixth season. If that happens, we will update this section with Luther season 6 release date.
